Our Story

Looking back, my journey has been one of constant evolution — a blend of creativity, family, and a deep love for design. I studied graphic design in Sydney, worked in the city for a number of years, experiences years of overseas travel, but eventually moved home to Newcastle to start a family and build the life we dreamed of.

For over 15 years, Michael and I have poured ourselves into creating beautiful spaces—renovating six homes and even a vintage caravan, often with a baby on my hip and deadlines looming. Between juggling full-time jobs, freelance consults, and raising four children, life was wonderfully chaotic. Each home we designed became a reflection of our journey—a blend of hard work, passion, and love.

In 2018, we launched Salt at Shoal Bay, our biggest project yet. Salt wasn’t just about creating a beautiful place for guests; it was about designing a life with more freedom. We wanted a place where families, just like ours, could connect, relax, and make memories without compromising on luxury.

This journey—through design, family, and everything in between—has been full of beauty, challenges, and growth. And with every new guest or creative project, the story continues to unfold, reminding us that the best things in life are often built with love, one step at a time.Salt at Shoal Bay was born from a dream that Michael and I shared—one that blended our love for family, design, and travel into something meaningful. We’d spent years designing, renovating, and building homes, learning from every challenge and success. But Salt was different—it was our biggest and most personal project. Nestled by the sea in Shoal Bay, a place that holds so many of our own special moments, we knew this was where we wanted to create something lasting.

We imagined a place where families and friends could relax without sacrificing the little luxuries—a space where barefoot mornings turned into long, laughter-filled evenings. The design was carefully thought out, with neutral tones and raw textures that reflect the soothing rhythm of the waves and the beauty of the bay. From the moment you walk in, we want you to feel calm, inspired, and at home​

But the heart of Salt is more than just its architecture—it’s the moments it holds. Seeing guests wake up to the sound of the ocean, or gather around the firepit under the stars, fills us with gratitude. We built this place not just as a business, but as a way to share the magic we’ve found in Shoal Bay.
